About the Position

The Ronald McDonald Family Room is a rest and respite space within University Hospital of Northern British Columbia for families with children receiving treatment. With an overnight guest room, laundry facilities, full kitchen, and a welcoming lounge, the space is a refuge for parents, siblings, and patients to step away from the medical environment and focus on being a family.

The Family Room is open 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, 7 days a week. This position is part-time with available shifts on weekdays, evenings and weekends.

This role engages with families, staff, visitors, and donors which requires the ability to interact in a thoughtful, energized, and forward-thinking manner. A preferred candidate is a multifaceted person who is self-confident, motivated, and able to work independently while being supported by volunteers. Reporting to the Family Room Manager, the Family Services Associate helps maintain day to day operations and the services the Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon provides to families at the University Hospital of Northern BC.

The Family Services Associates – Family Room will ensure everyone who comes into the Family Room is made to feel welcome. 

Key responsibilities include:

Reception

• Greet and welcome visitors to the Prince George Family Room to ensure a welcoming and seamless entry for visitors and guests who stay overnight.
• Organize daily administrative operations, volunteer support and conduct housekeeping duties.
• Receive all incoming phone calls and answer questions, remembering that every call may be that of a donor or family in need.
• Greet all visitors to Prince George Family Room.
• Provide orientation of the Family Room to all guests and visitors to ensure compliance with policies.
• Liaise with families, social workers, housekeeping staff, hospital representatives, donors and others.
• Orient new families to the Family Room and sleeping rooms as per orientation procedures.

Administration

• Support and supervise volunteers.
• Ensure security of Family Room and liaise with hospital security regarding any concerns,
• Provide clerical assistance as needed and maintain filing system.
• Respond to emergencies in a timely manner and complete related incident reports for review by the Senior Director, Family Services and Family Room Manager.
• Adhere to safety and emergency procedures.

Experience and Educational Requirements

• Experience working with families or those in emotional or crisis situations
• Experience in front line reception or customer service
• Experience with light housekeeping and physically able to perform light duties including bed, making and furniture arrangement
• Diploma or post-secondary education in Social Services, Community Recreation or relevant field.
• Training in San’yas, Mental Health First Aid, and Trauma Informed Care preferred.

About the Position

The Recreation Therapy Assistant reports to the Programs Manager and works in a collaborative, team-based environment to develop, deliver, and evaluate meaningful recreation and social programs that support the diverse population we serve. 

This full-time role requires flexibility, including availability during evenings and weekends, to meet organizational needs and provide meaningful programming for families. The schedule may vary weekly to accommodate program requirements.

Program Role:

• Develop intentional programming to increase the well-being for all ages – adult and children.
• Facilitate programming with support of volunteers or students.
• Provide functional direction to volunteers or practicum students
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs
• Provide detailed information about programs and the therapeutic benefits
• Actively collaborate with the Family Services team to increase program engagement, being flexible and adaptable to an ever-changing fast paced environment.
• Coordinate and lead out trips for families.
• Collaborate with the Celebration Committee to facilitate seasonal events and celebrations.
• Work closely with Programs Manager to oversee program spaces; den, playroom, education room, celebration cupboard. 

Reporting and Administration

• Update, post, and maintain records of programs schedule and sign-up sheets.
• Create and organize memos and signage for distribution.
• Prepare a calendar of events and present monthly to the team.
• Maintain inventory of program supplies and materials. Support purchasing
• Support the celebration committee with follow up notes/minutes.
• Participate in meetings as required.
• Meet weekly with Programs Manager.

Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon provides a vital home away from home for families with seriously ill children requiring specialized medical treatment far from home. Supporting families from across BC and Yukon, including Prince George, Kamloops, Whitehorse, and Victoria, the House offers a place of comfort, healing, and togetherness during difficult times.

In addition to offering a safe and comforting place to stay, Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon provides wellness programs to support the holistic healing of families. These include Music Therapy with a certified therapist, a Chef-led Family Meal Program, Massage Therapy, Pet Therapy, and Art Therapy, all designed to nurture both physical and emotional well-being during challenging times.

About the Volunteer Position

As a Community Event Volunteer, you’ll play a key role in helping our events run smoothly.

Tasks may include:

- Selling 50/50 tickets - minimum 19 years old
- Representing our organization with a friendly and professional attitude
- Assisting with event setup and takedown (light lifting may be required)
- Engaging with attendees and creating a welcoming atmosphere
